Rica can't wait for Adventure Week with her grandfather! But when Grampy arrives with a sprained ankle, can they make their own fun at home instead?
Rica Baptista is living the good life. Grampy, the best Grampy of all Grampies, is coming to visit, and Adventure Week, the best week of all weeks, is finally here. Rica doesn't yet know if they will bounce on trampolines, go horseback riding, or even tour Fenway Park and watch the Red Sox play, but she knows they will have the best time ever. When Grampy hobbles into the house on crutches, however, Rica worries that this year's Adventure Week will be adventure-less. So she pulls out all the stops with the help of her best friend, Laini (who surely has eaten enough cachupa to be at least part Cape Verdean like Rica), from organizing a family talent show to secretly planning a whole day of playing cards and eating candy. Will it be enough to keep this year's Adventure Week from being a total flop? A sweet story of making memories during an unexpected stay-venture, sprinkled with funny and cute family moments.

Grades 2-5 In the second Rica Baptista chapter book, Grampy comes to visit for Adventure Week. Unfortunately, Grampy has a sprained ankle, and Rica and her friend have to make all-new plans that don't involve jumping, zip lines, or beach days. What can you do with a man on crutches in a house where healthy eating is the rule? Sneak candy, of course, and play card games and do a talent show--but this Adventure Week doesn't feel the same, and Rica and Grampy have to find ways to bring joy and humor back into a tough situation while he heals. This is a breezy chapter book for developing readers that invites them into a vibrant household and community, explores Cape Verdean culture and new languages, and asks them to bring their imagination to the situation: What exactly makes an Adventure Week a Week of Shenanigans? The illustrations complement the text well by providing characterization without overwhelming the story. For fans of Wednesday Wilson and Definitely Dominguita, developing readers, and lovers of low-stakes family adventures.

Gr 2-4-In this series sequel, Rica's ready for Grampy's arrival and can't wait for their upcoming Adventure Week. She's excited about what he'll surprise her and her best friend Laini with in terms of activities. When Grampy arrives with a sprained ankle, Rica's seriously disappointed. She records her hopes in her prayer journal before heading to bed that night. The next morning, she, Grampy, and Laini try to make the best of things by planning a "StayVenture Week." Cartoons, Cards, and Candy Day starts out well, but goes sour when they eat so much candy they get sick. Talent, Twins, and Trail Mix Day provides plenty of enjoyment-until the twins spread chocolate over everything! And the Escapade Extraordinaire doesn't even get off the ground. Just as the girls decide the week's been a failure, Grampy reminds them of the fun they've had and that memories of great jokes, funny outfits, and great company can make up for a lot. VERDICT A delightful book full of funny moments, great relationships, and learning opportunities for Rica and Laini. A first purchase.-Heidi Grange
