In three-page chapters, Lutzer (Lover of a Woman’s Soul) explores Scripture verses related to more than 30 biblical themes, including “God,” “Creation,” “Jesus,” “Accepting Ourselves,” “Getting Along with Others,” and “Jesus’s Return.” Each chapter contains several thematically related verses; an introduction; a “What I Think” section that lists bullet point questions from a young reader’s perspective; a corresponding “What God Wants Me to Know” section with a list of explanatory statements; a “Look at It This Way...” section, which offers story interpretations; a b&w cartoon; and a closing prayer. Lutzer writes from a biblical literalist’s perspective; for example, she mentions evolution in the “Creation” chapter, followed by, “Of course, no one can prove it.” Certain themes—such as atonement, salvation, discipline, obedience to parents and God, spiritual armor, and the importance of memorizing scripture—receive repeated emphasis. While the guided questions and absolutist explanations may not appeal to more liberal readers, Lutzer’s frequently sensible advice (“talk to a parent, a teacher, or someone else we trust”) and relatable stories will allow others to engage with Scripture, especially those seeking conservative Christian biblical interpretations. Ages 7–12. (Mar.) ■
