In England in 1881, widow Rose Finlay balances her assistant manager post-office job and concern for a young woman she overhears in conversation with an older man. While at a local tea shop after work, Rose sees an aristocrat who corresponds with many women meet young Sophie and remembers how her own husband fooled her for a long time into thinking he was honorable, only for her to find out at his death that he had another wife. Sophie's uncle enlists Rose's help after he sees her watching when Sophie meets the man again, and soon Rose is serving as chaperone at society events that recall her past, as people look down on her now in her present circumstances. Intrepid Rose's circumstances of survival and new chances carry the engrossing historical read that brings the turn of the nineteenth century to vivid life with plenty of detail. Rose and John are strong, smart, and very appealing characters in Delamere's realistic and emotional romance.
