"Adam Lazarre-White's narration is multifaceted. His deep, resonating voice creates an enveloping soundscape, and he fully embodies the unique main characters of Cosby's latest crime novel." —AudioFile on Razorblade Tears
Award-winning New York Times bestselling author S. A. Cosby's debut novel My Darkest Prayer is republished in a new edition, with a new introduction from the author.

"I handle the bodies."
Whether it's working at his cousin's funeral home or tossing around the local riffraff at his favorite bar, Nathan Waymaker is a man who knows how to handle the bodies. A former marine and sheriff's deputy, Nathan has built a reputation in his small Southern town as a man who can help when all other avenues have been exhausted. When a beloved local minister is found dead, his parishioners ask Nathan to make sure the death isn't swept under the rug.
What starts out as an easy payday soon descends into a maze of mayhem filled with wannabe gangsters, vicious crime lords, porn stars, crooked police officers, and a particularly treacherous preacher and his mysterious wife. Nathan must use all his varied skills and some of his wit to navigate the murky waters of small town corruption even as dark secrets of his own threaten to come to the surface.

Adam Lazarre-White performs S.A. Cosby's reissued debut novel. Nathan Waymaker is a former law enforcement officer now working at his cousin's funeral home in the Chesapeake Bay area. When a local pastor dies under mysterious circumstances, two women from the pastor's congregation approach Waymaker, offering to pay him to look into the pastor's death. Lazarre-White's performance is subtle, a master class in narrating a book from a single viewpoint. Lazarre-White captures Waymaker's character perfectly, embodying his wounded spirit and his resilience in the face of the constant injustices he witnesses while trying to find out why the pastor died. This reissue of Cosby's (Razorblade Tears) debut novel, now on audio, shows an enormously talented writer coming into his craft. As a former marine and sheriff's deputy, Nathan Waymaker has led an interesting but tragic life. His parents were violently killed, and he's frustrated with his small town's corrupt and incompetent police force. Nathan is known as someone who can take the law into his own hands, but when he's asked to investigate a preacher's death and discovers a world of adult-film stars, gangsters, and megachurches, he realizes he may have taken on too much. As this is Cosby's debut, one can see his own artistic growing pains, particularly in his somewhat stereotyped depictions of women (e.g., the damsel in distress who needs the hero's help). Even so, he displays a remarkable talent for dark humor and for creating fascinating but morally questionable characters. Adam Lazarre-White's exceptional vocal talents bring these Southern gothic characters to life, capturing the grit and violence of Cosby's world. Additionally, an introduction by Cosby adds context to this book's creation. VERDICT While a bit unpolished, this is a necessary listen for diehard Cosby fans who are eager to see how the talented writer has grown.--James Gardner
