Red is an important color to animals. The mandrill ape with the most red on his face will be the leader of the group. The healthier a rooster is the brighter its comb is. Red Animals will help readers understand that colors in nature are not just for beauty, but sometimes have more important purposes. Included in this title is a color wheel showing primary and secondary colors and their relationships. Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards. Abdo Kids is a division of ABDO.

PreS-Gr 2-This series features the happy melding of two popular early childhood topics: colors and animals. The opening spreads provide brief information on the color (whether it's primary or secondary) and include a color wheel and mixing chart. White is described as the starting point for color, with pigments added to make different colors. Eight animals are featured per book, divided into three sections: land, air, and water. Land is, not surprisingly, the most popular group, while Green Animals stretches to include the mainly earthbound mantises under air. Readers will find definitions helpful, such as the explanation for albinism in White Animals: "some animals can be born all white." Each spread is comprised of a large, close-up photo of the animal and two to three descriptive sentences. A selection of extensions is available on the ABDOKids.com site. VERDICT These will be great additions to color units and popular for individual use as well as for group sharing.

Each book opens with a somewhat off-topic single-spread introduction to a specific color, with emphasis on mixing primary and secondary colors, and then enumerates animals of that color "on land," "in air," and "in water." Superficial facts about each animal accompany a large, bright photo on each spread, giving new readers plenty of resting points. Random additional facts are appended. Glos., ind.
