Lieutenant Harry T. Buford was a respected Confederate soldier who fought in four major battles during the Civil War and later became a double agent spying for the Southern cause. However, Lieutenant Buford was actually Loreta Janeta Velazquez! Velazquez was a Cuban woman living in New Orleans, who disguised herself as a man in order to experience freedoms otherwise unattainable to her. This captivating book explores her unconventional life as a soldier, a spy, and a Latina in the American South who lived life on her own terms.

Grades 5-7 Loreta Janeta Velzquez was a Cuban woman who disguised herself as a male soldier and fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War. We follow her from a childhood in Cuba to New Orleans, where she married and lost three children. As part of the Confederacy, she took part in numerous battles. After being wounded, her identity was discovered, and she became a spy. When Velzquez wrote about her experiences in a memoir, she was branded as a fake. Imery-Garcia's text gives interesting details while providing larger historical context. Chapters include historical images along with black-and-white photographs and sidebars that further illuminate the Civil War. Part of the Our Voices: Spanish and Latino Figures of American History series (6 titles), this biography offers a rare perspective and is recommended for all nonfiction collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
