Grades 2-5 The latest book in the popular Laugh-Out-Loud series offers a collection of "dad jokes," the sort that a father might tell his children. With five kids of his own and a talent for writing jokes, Elliott certainly knows something about the topic. The humor is age-appropriate for elementary school students, and since there's no real upper limit on jokes, older readers may find them amusing too. The pages are nicely laid out, usually with two or three jokes each and plenty of white space. The jokes are presented in a simple, 2-line, Q&A framework, which provides a setup and a punchline. Only the "question" appears in bold type, such as, "Q: What do you call a really bad dad joke? A: Pop corn!" Or, for book-themed humor, there's "Q: Why did the book go to the hospital? A: It had to have its appendix out." Many of the answers involve plays on words, which young readers often enjoy, and small, grayscale illustrations add a cheerful visual element to the pages.
