Undeterred by world war and enemy submarines, Amelia Peabody—Grandmaster Elizabeth Peters's indomitable archaeologist-sleuth—once again sets sail for Egypt, where ghosts of an ancient past and specters of a present-day evil hover silently over an inscrutable land.

With son Ramses, his wife, Nefret, and a few unwelcome additions in tow, the elder Peabody-Emersons embark on a dangerous sea voyage to Alexandria, ultimately ending up in Cairo for their annual excavations. But in this autumn of 1915 the exotic, alluring city is not what it used to be. Cairo has been transformed into an armed camp teeming with enemy agents, and shockingly bold tomb robbers are brazenly desecrating the ancient sites.

Amelia's foremost priority is to prevent the War Office from pressing Ramses into service again, on the same sort of job that almost cost him his life the previous year. But in these terrible days of global conflict and relentless skullduggery, no place in Egypt is safe. Even remote Luxor provides no guarantee of safety, especially after Amelia discovers a fresh corpse resting in an ancient tomb.

The grim discovery presages further trouble for the Emersons, as the sinister conundrum pulls them all into a bubbling morass of corruption, intrigue, and international espionage deeper and more fiendish than any they have hitherto encountered. Death follows death, with abduction and an assault on Amelia herself intensifying the chaos of a world at war.

Yet there is an even darker danger in store for the Emersons. Can it be that one of Amelia's oldest and most dangerous adversaries will intervene to alter the family's destiny? Tantalizing clues suggest that this may be so and point toward an archaeological discovery of unparalleled importance—and the resurrection of a voice that has been silent for millennia.

In Egypt, 1915, the redoubtable English archaeologist Amelia Peabody Emerson and her eccentric and closely knit group of family and friends are up to their old tricks. The Emersons may believe that they are merely engaging in another season of excavation, but legions of devoted readers know that Amelia's archaeological fervor has never stopped her from charging into another thrilling episode of crime-solving, dragging her husband and children enthusiastically along. Amelia's son, Ramses, and his new wife, Nefret, are trying to settle into their married life and find ways to build a more equal relationship with their overwhelming and irrepressibly adventurous parent. Amelia is worried, however, that an officious British army officer might try to recruit Ramses again as a spy (as in the previous book, 2000's He Shall Thunder in the Sky). To keep him out of the spymaster's clutches, she sends Ramses and Nefret off to Luxor to investigate a series of thefts from archaeological sites. As always in this series of uproarious Egyptological mysteries, plenty of strange doings are afoot in the desert, and readers will find all the delicious trappings of a vintage Peters extravaganza—lost tombs, kidnappings, deadly attacks, mummies and sinister villains. (May 1)Forecast: Her large and faithful following will ensure that Peters, a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, once again reaches the lofty heights of the bestseller lists.

Barbara Rosenblat, who reads all of Peters's Amelia Peabody archaeological mysteries, again demonstrates her ability as a vocal quick-change artist. Continuing characters include the self-assured Peabody, her crusty, aristocratic husband Emerson, son Ramses, his wife Nefret, and an international group of lesser folk, including tomb robbers, assassins, and a meddling reporter. The plot, set against the background of WWI Cairo, is as complicated as the relationship among the players. There's lots of action, but explication may have been lost in the abridgment. Rosenblat's skill as a reader is unquestioned, though fans of this series may prefer her unabridged narration for Recorded Books. J.B.G. 2002 Audie Award Finalist. (c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine

Amelia is up to her old tricks, ferreting out the identities of evildoers and tomb-robbers in the Cairo of 1916. She and the rest of the extended Emerson family are about as much fun as anyone can have and never leave home. Wry wit and sparkling dialogue propel you headlong into the sights, sounds and textures of a bygone era when Britain took its opulence and grandeur for granted. No one has more fun with this eccentric, highly educated, and fiercely loyal bunch than Barbara Rosenblat . She puts on the persona of Amelia like a favorite pair of old slippers. Long beloved among audiophiles for her incredible Golden Voice, she is at her best in this bestselling series. A book read by Rosenblat is a treat to be savored and cherished. D.G.
