From acclaimed journalist Walter Shapiro, the true life story of how his great-uncle—a Jewish vaudeville impresario and exuberant con man—managed to cheat Hitler’s agents in the run-up to WWII.
All his life, journalist Walter Shapiro assumed that the outlandish stories about his great-uncle Freeman were exaggerated family lore; some cockamamie Jewish revenge fantasies dreamt up to entertain the kids and venerate their larger-than-life relative. Only when he started researching Freeman Bernstein’s life did he realize that his family was actually holding back—the man had enough stories, vocations, and IOUs to fill a dozen lifetimes. Freeman was many people: a vaudeville manager, boxing promoter, stock swindler, card shark and self-proclaimed “Jade King of China.” But his greatest title, perhaps the only man who can claim such infamy, was as The Man Who Hustled Hitler.
A cross between The Night They Raided Minsky’s and Guys and Dolls, Freeman Bernstein’s life was itself an old New York sideshow extravaganza, one that Shapiro expertly stages in Hustling Hitler. From a ragtag childhood in Troy, New York, Shapiro follows his great-uncle’s ever-crooked trajectory through show business, from his early schemes on the burlesque circuit to marrying his star performer, May Ward, and producing silent films—released only in Philadelphia. Of course, all of Freeman’s cons and schemes were simply a prelude to February 18, 1937, the day he was arrested by the LAPD outside of Mae West’s apartment in Hollywood.
The charge? Grand larceny—for cheating Adolf Hitler and the Nazi government. In the capstone of his slippery career, Freeman had promised to ship thirty-five tons of embargoed Canadian nickel to the Führer; when the cargo arrived, the Germans found only huge, useless quantities of scrap metal and tin. It was a blow to their economy and war preparations—and Hitler did not take the bait-and-switch lightly.
Told with cinematic verve and hilarious perspective, Hustling Hitler is Shapiro’s incredible investigation into the man behind the myth. By reconstructing his great-uncle’s remarkable career, Shapiro has transformed Freeman Bernstein from a barely there footnote in history to the larger-than-life, eternal hustler who forever changed it.

The tale of Freeman Bernstein, a Broadway grifter who scammed Nazi officials on the eve of World War II.Roll Call columnist Shapiro (One-Car Caravan: On the Road with the 2004 Democrats Before America Tunes In, 2003), Bernstein's great-nephew, first heard of his relative's coup as a bit of family lore. Research proved it to be the capstone of a long career of dirty deals, including bankruptcies, jail time in at least two countries, and many unpaid bills. Born in upstate New York in 1873, Bernstein was the son of Polish Jews who came to the U.S. five years earlier. His first scrape with the law came at age 13, when he was nabbed for lifting $10 from a swimmer's unguarded pants. Freed on a technicality, he took the lesson that there's always a way to beat the law. A long string of scams and scuffles followed. He gravitated to the horseplayers and sharpers of the Saratoga racing season and took to booking acts in local burlesque theaters. He soon developed a reputation for stiffing the performers, and he became a well-known Broadway character, with frequent appearances in the pages of Variety. A bright spot was his marriage to May Ward, a minor vaudeville star whose taste for the finer things of life matched Bernstein's. Shapiro chronicles Bernstein's career in depth, thanks in part to his frequent mentions in Variety. But after a while, Bernstein's exploits lose appeal; few of the ways to stiff the innocent inspire admiration. Shapiro deploys a wise-guy style reminiscent of the showbiz columnists of Bernstein's heyday, but this also wears thin. Reader interest is kept alive awaiting Bernstein's crowning coup: bilking the Nazis by delivering scrap metal instead of the valuable nickel they paid for. Occasional glimpses of better-known showbiz figures provide color--Bernstein crossed paths with Mae West, Will Rogers, Sophie Tucker, and other real stars of the era--but nothing can really make Bernstein himself likable. An intermittently interesting look at a character who was undoubtedly raw material for Ring Lardner and Damon Runyon.

Esteemed political columnist Shapiro presents an enjoyable, rather unsettling work which can best be described as a guilty pleasure. Others may characterize Freeman Bernstein, Shapiro's great-uncle, whom he never met, as a sociopathic grifter or even a scumbag. Bernstein acted as a theatrical agent and promoter, stiffed performers of their pay, defrauded businessmen, sold fake jewelry, and hurt numerous innocent people with his shenanigans, without a shred of conscience. But Shapiro views him as a Damon Runyonesque type, a colorful and amusing rogue. Indeed, Bernstein had a certain shameless flair as he flitted from coast to coast, running his schemes while interacting with such celebrities as Mae West and Will Rogers. He loved and attracted publicity, was undeterred by time in prison, and repeatedly conned people who should have known better. His crowning jewel was selling near-useless scrap metal to Nazi Germany instead of raw nickel for their armaments industry. Perhaps Bernstein will be judged by a higher power, but this rendering of his life can provide some surprisingly dramatic moments and chuckles.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
