A DEADLY PLEASURES MYSTERY MAGAZINE BEST OF 2024 IN DEBUT MYSTERY/CRIME NOVEL PICK!
Inspired by the real-life mother of forensic science, Frances Glessner Lee, and featuring a whip-smart, intrepid sleuth in post-WWII Vermont, this debut historical mystery will appeal to fans of Victoria Thompson and Rhys Bowen.

Maple Bishop is ready to put WWII and the grief of losing her husband, Bill, behind her. But when she discovers that Bill left her penniless, Maple realizes she could lose her Vermont home next and sets out to make money the only way she knows how: by selling her intricately crafted dollhouses. Business is off to a good start—until Maple discovers her first customer dead, his body hanging precariously in his own barn.
Something about the supposed suicide rubs Maple the wrong way, but local authorities brush off her concerns. Determined to help them see “what’s big in what’s small,” Maple turns to what she knows best, painstakingly recreating the gruesome scene in miniature: death in a nutshell.
With the help of a rookie officer named Kenny, Maple uses her macabre miniature to dig into the dark undercurrents of her sleepy town, where everyone seems to have a secret—and a grudge. But when her nosy neighbor goes missing and she herself becomes a suspect, it’ll be up to Maple to find the devil in the details—and put him behind bars.
Drawing inspiration from true crime and offering readers a smartly plotted puzzle of a mystery, Death in the Details is a stunning series debut.

A World War II widow solves a crime the police would rather ignore. Loosely following the story of forensic-science pioneer Frances Glessner Lee, Tietjen relates the sad tale of Mabel "Maple" Bishop, a lawyer who moved with her husband, Bill, a physician, to rural Vermont in search of a safer and kinder life than the one they'd had in Boston. After Bill's death in a field hospital in France, Maple learns that his estate amounts to a meager $12.67. Bill's willingness to treat Elderberry's sick whether or not they could pay had left his practice in the red. Despite her husband's generosity, the people of Elderberry still regard Maple as an outsider, and, on top of that, no one will hire a woman to work as a lawyer. Maple has gotten to know Ben Crenshaw, owner of the local hardware store, while buying supplies to make meticulously crafted dollhouses. When he suggests she might want to display her dollhouses in his store and sell them, her hobby becomes a means of supporting herself. But while delivering her first sale to local farmer's wife Angela Wallace, Maple makes a grim discovery: Angela's husband, Elijah, hanging from a noose in his barn. The police dismiss Elijah's death as an accident, but Maple believes otherwise. Now her dollhouses take on a third life: from pastime to livelihood to crime-fighting tool. To prod the police into action, Maple recreates the crime scene in miniature to show how an accidental death was impossible. Her efforts are wasted on Sheriff Sam Scott, but Kenny, a young officer-in-training, takes an interest and joins forces with Maple to discover the truth. Firm, uncompromising, and sometimes rubbing her neighbors the wrong way, Maple sees details others overlook and, guided by an unwavering moral compass, pursues questions the police have left open. Tietjen gives all of her characters rich, full inner lives as they interact in ways that are both aesthetically and morally complex. A compelling account of how the toll of war extends far beyond the battlefield.

Maple Bishop is a WWII war widow in rural Vermont, struggling with being penniless after clearing her husband's debts. One day, she sees two farmers, Wallace and Mooreland, fighting, with one threatening to kill the other over a dead cow. Shaken, Maple asks the sheriff to intervene; she is rebuffed. To earn a few dollars, Maple takes the hardware-store owner up on his offer to let her use his front window as a workshop for her detailed dollhouses. When she takes her first commission from Wallace's wife, she finds Wallace hanging in the barn. The medical examiner declares the death accidental. But using her powers of recall and her dollhouse skills, Maple builds a model, or "nutshell," of the scene to prove it was murder. At first the sheriff dismisses her claims, but as the investigation continues, Maple and the sheriff's young deputy uncover something more sinister than a farmers' squabble. This smart debut was inspired by the "nutshells of unexplained death," or dioramas, made by heiress Frances Glessner Lee and used to teach forensic crime-scene analysis.
