PANTRY MAKEOVER • It’s time to restock the pantry with healthy staples that will help you make nutritious, tasty meals every day of the week.
Grains and legumes • These foods are something most of us should be eating more of, with research showing many health benefits associated with increased intakes of both wholegrains and legumes. Store these in airtight containers in a cool, dry, dark area. Most grains and legumes will keep for at least 6 months and some grains keep for longer if stored in the refrigerator, particularly in warmer weather.
Canned foods • Cans should be kept in a dry place to prevent rusting. Although they can technically be kept indefinitely, for optimum nutrition, canned foods should not be kept longer than a year. Discard cans that are swollen, badly dented, rusted or leaking. Choose canned foods labelled ‘no-added-salt’ or ‘salt-reduced’.
